After the cold war, this cat breed became an international cat breed. In the year 1990, they were first imported to the United States of America. This breed was recognized by the TICA (International Cat Association), ACFA (American Cat Fanciers Association) & the CFA (Cat Fanciers Association)

In Russia, the breed is popular with the name Sibirskaja koschka, meaning a strong house cat.  The cat got this name because of its strong and powerful build.

In the year 1980, the Siberian Cat emerged in the eastern parts of Germany. Later in the year 1985, an experimental breed of the cat was also bred. From the year 1986, the resulting cats of this experimental breeding were exhibited. And after this experiment, the breed started to be known as the Siberian Forest Cat.  On 12 May , 1988, the first litter of the Siberian Forest cat was given birth in east Germany.
