17 Tasty Family BBQ Sides Recipes

Homemade BBQ sides for the whole family.

It's easy to know what to throw on the BBQ when you are thinking about having a good old fashioned meal outside.

The hard thing is finding the perfect sides to complement your barbecue meal. We have compiled a list of tasty family BBQ sides recipes to complete this mealtime.

Potato Salad

Potato salad is often a big win for the family and it is super easy to make - the recipe only uses a few ingredients and can be personalised to you.

Cut your potatoes up into quarters (no small enough for the salad but just so they cook through while boiling).

Boil your potatoes so that they are cooked through but not mushy. Cooking time is variable but try approx. 8 minutes and then check on them every minute after that. You should be able to stick your knife into them but there should still be some crunch.

Once cooked, drain your potatoes and leave them out till they have cooled down completely.

While your potatoes are cooling down, dice or chop your chosen onions into small pieces.

When the potatoes are completely cool then you can chop them into slightly smaller pieces before dressing them in mayonnaise and adding your onions.

Season, as desired, with salt, pepper and parsley (fresh if you have it). Feel free to experiment with herbs depending on your family's preferences.

Use a vegan alternative mayonnaise for your vegan guests at the bbq!

Corn on the Cob

Corn on the cob is an easy side to do for a BBQ because grilled corn usually goes down a treat. The best corn for a barbecue is very fresh and still covered by its husk. Make sure that the ears smell sweet for the freshest corn and the best BBQ side dish. This is because if you put the whole corn directly on the grill then it will burn the husk while perfectly cooking the corn inside. There is no need to prep or marinate the corn before just pop your corn on the grill and cook for approx. 15 minutes turning sporadically.

BBQ Sides

Corn Salad

If grilled corn is not the preferred way to eat it then you can always make a corn salad for the table. For this salad you will need:

1 red onion, finely chopped

2 large tomatoes, deseeded and finely diced

1/2 small pack coriander, roughly chopped

juice 2 limes

2 tsp clear honey

For the salad, combine the sweetcorn, red onion, tomatoes and coriander and make the dressing from the lime, olive oil and honey. You can serve the dressing on the side or on the salad already.

Coleslaw is another one of the barbecue side dishes that simply consists of three ingredients: white cabbage, carrot and mayonnaise. It is a truly simple side dish and usually goes down a treat. All you need to do is shred or grate the white cabbage and carrot to get it into long strips. Once you have that you marinate it in the mayonnaise and season as desired. You can always jazz up your coleslaw too with option add ons such as; apples, cheese, vinegar, mustard, red cabbage or anything else you might like to see in your coleslaw.
