Liaoningopterus was a pterosaur that existed during the Early Cretaceous period. Its partial fossil remains were excavated from China.
According to research studies, these creatures were piscivores and captured their prey easily with their sharp teeth and pointed snout. Their head was small, compared to its body, which was quite elongated.
Read on to learn more about this species.
Liaoningopterus is pronounced as 'Lee-ow-ning-op-teh-rus'.
These creatures were pterodactyloid pterosaurs, which were classified under the Anhangueridae family.
These pterosaurs existed during the Early Cretaceous period.
The Liaoningopterus species became extinct about 145 million years ago.
Their fossils were excavated from China.
These pterodactyloid pterosaurs with sharp teeth in the upper jaws and lower jaws suggest that they were piscivores, and therefore, inhabited the wetlands and nearby water bodies.
Several scientific studies reveal that pterosaurs lived in groups.
The exact life span of this species is not known.
The Liaoningopterus reproduced by laying eggs, that were rounded and amniotic.
According to the studies on the specimen of vertebra and skull, these species had an elongated body with a protruded snout. Their snout crest was symmetrical and the upper jaw edge was quite straight. Conical and curved teeth were present in their upper jaws and lower jaws.
Due to a lack of fossil evidence, we are unable to provide the exact information on the number of bones these animals had. The fossils retrieved included a postcranial skeleton and a partial skull.
They communicated vocally and visually.
Liaoningopterus length is not known.
The vertebrate paleontology of the pterosaurs suggests that they had large wings but we do not know how many. However, the exact flying speed is not known. Their neck helped them to navigate during flight. This was quite special about this animal.
Unfortunately, we are not able to provide the weight of this species due to a lack of information.
There are no names given to the male and female dinosaur species.
A baby dinosaur may be called a hatchling.
Even though they survived on fish and were not meat-eater, we can assume that these creatures were aggressive in nature.
Liaoningopterus species were known to possess the longest teeth that were ever seen in a pterosaur, which was about 3.2 in (8.1 cm), the maximum height recorded in the upper jaw.
