Aniksosurus darwini were discovered in the Bajo Barreal Formation of Argentina in 2006. Paleontologists Rubén Dario Martínez and Fernando Emilio Novas discovered the fossil. The name Aniksosaurus means 'spring lizard', derived from a Greek word that means 'spring'. The fossil of this spring lizard was found on September 21, 1995, which is the day of spring onset in the Southern Hemisphere. The epithet was first coined in 1995; the name of the type species was given in honor of Charles Darwin. Through morphological evidence like growth cycles, the holotype was concluded to be about the age of three.
