21 Dino-mite Sinotyrannus Facts That Kids Will Love

Sinotyrannus facts on a carnivorous dinosaur.

Sinotyrannus is one of the largest known theropod from the Jiufotang formation, the biggest basal tyrannosauroids. Sinotyrannus is also known as the Chinese tyrant. This dinosaur is known from a single fossil specimen. Sinotyrannus was seen in the Aptian age of the Cretaceous. They belong to a genus of the biggest basal proceratosaurid dinosaur and are known to be a close relative of the primitive Tyrannosaurus. It is much larger than contemporary tyrannosauroids, although tyrannosauroids are not much older than the Sinotyrannus.

A single incomplete fossil specimen that included a partial skull of the Sinotyrannus was found in the Jiufotang Formation of Liaoning, China in the early Cretaceous period. They were primarily carnivores and consumed various insects and animals within their habitat range. This dinosaur's skeletons and remains are scarce, especially since their partial skull was recovered. They belong to the classification order Saurischia and suborder Theropoda. Sinotyrannus Interesting Facts

How do you pronounce 'Sinotyrannus'?

Sinotyrannus is pronounced 'sigh-noe-tie-ran-nus' in phonetics. This is part of a large basal proceratosaurid dinosaur.

What type of dinosaur was a Sinotyrannus?

Sinotyrannus is a type of theropod that belongs to the classification Kingdom Animalia, phylum Chordata, order Saurischis, family proceratosauridae, and genus proceratosaurid tyrannosauroid. This is a part of large basal proceratosaurid dinosaurs.

In which geological period did the Sinotyrannus roam the earth?

These relatives of tyrannosaurids were found in the Aptian age of the Cretaceous. This theropod was seen at a particular age. All dinosaur species went extinct about 65 million years ago.

When did the Sinotyrannus become extinct?

Snityrannus lived through the Aptian age of the Cretaceous and post that they became extinct. This theropod survives on a carnivorous diet and its existence was discovered by scientists.

Where did a Sinotyrannus live?

Sinotyrannus lives close to forests and grasslands. They were seen in North America and Asia including parts of China. These tyrannosaurids consume a carnivorous diet and hence are seen in a particular habitat range.

What was a Sinotyrannus's habitat?

Sinotyrannus habitat constitutes forests and grasslands where it found easy access to food and other requirements like shelter. Fossils of these species have been found in China.

Who did a Sinotyrannus live with?

Sinotyrannus live with other species of their own kind. Sinotyrannus was a carnivore and they were species effective in hunting for their food.

How long did a Sinotyrannus live?

The exact lifespan of a Sinotyrannus is not evaluated. Their fossils were found in Chinese territories but not in complete portions. The tyrannosaurids or tyrannosaurus, a relative of the Sinotyrannus, lifespan is estimated at around 30 years.

How did they reproduce?

The Chinese tyrant reproduced via sexual reproduction similar to other theropod dinosaurs. Males and females were similar in appearance and description. Males would deposit sperm into the female and the egg would fertilize internally. The female would then lay eggs and young dinosaurs would then hatch from the eggs after a period of time. The hatchlings were dependent on their parents for food and protection. Parents would protect their young at all times.

Sinotyrannus Fun Facts

What did a Sinotyrannus look like?

Sinotyrannus is exactly as per description. They are considered to be small in length. Fossil remains of these species were found in China. Their classification is kingdom Animalia, phylum Chordata, order Saurischis, family proceratosauridae, and genus proceratosaurid tyrannosauroid. Sinotyrannus is a genus of proceratosaurid tyrannosauroid, hence they are similar in length and size. They have a head with a protruding top followed by a short neck and long backbone. Their forelimbs are short and their hindlimbs are longer. They have sharp claws long in length which they use to easily catch their prey.

Their face constitutes of their dark-colored eyes and a mouth with sharp teeth inside. Sinotyrannus is often confused with yutyrannus also known as the feathered tyrant. Sinotyrannus vs yutyrannus differs by the crests they possess on their head which is usually seen on a Sinotyrannus also they are among the largest feathered dinosaur. Both species of theropod would engage in flights often.

Sinotyrannus was an exotic dinosaur species fossils of which were found in China.

How many bones did a Sinotyrannus have?

In 2010, Gregory S Paul estimated their length to be 30 ft (9.1 m). Their weight was estimated at 5511.6 lb (2.5 t) however, in the year 2016 it was estimated to be 24.6 ft (7.5 m) and to weigh 2645.6 lb (1.2 t). Out of the preserved bone fossils, cranial elements include the premaxilae, dentary, and portions of the nasals. The dorsal edge of the maxilla is uncommonly concave dissimilar to the convex as seen in tyrannosaurids.

A disarticulated skeleton inside the Sinotyrannus head constitutes the main part of the skull in front. Apart from this, they have three dorsal vertebrae, three articulated phalanges, and fragmentary bones. Three vertebrae of these basal species that were preserved have tall neural spines. Apart from these, they have their ribcage, which protects their internal organs and the bones of their forelimbs. Sinotyrannus theropod has a hip bone which helps it attain balance as well as facilitate movement and the bones in their hindlimbs. They have a long tail. The whole spine is constituted in such a manner that it supports the whole body. The Sinotyrannus size is considered to be small.

How did they communicate?

Dinosaur or theropod species are considered to make use of visual and auditory means to communicate. Theropod also communicates using their body language.

How big was a Sinotyrannus?

Sinotyrannus is one of the biggest basal tyrannosauroids and was 24.6 ft (7.5 m) in height, which is almost five times bigger than 5 ft (1.52 m), the height of the smallest tyrannosaur.

How fast could a Sinotyrannus move?

Sinotyrannus is a genus of large basal tyrannosauroids and had the capability to move around effectively. Their exact speed is not evaluated.

How much did a Sinotyrannus weigh?

Sinotyrannus weigh 2645.6 lb (1.2 t) on average however, this is dependent on the diet and habitat. Argentinosaurus was the heaviest dinosaur in the world that ever lived.

What were the male and female names of the species?

Male and female dinosaur species are not addressed differently. They differ in reproductive functions and are difficult to tell apart.

What would you call a baby Sinotyrannus?

A baby dinosaur is usually referred to as a hatchling once its hatches from its egg. The young is completely dependent on its parents for food and shelter and becomes independent only gradually.

What did they eat?

Sinotyrannus is primarily a carnivore and consumes both insects and animals, mostly small animals that they saw within their habitat range. They may have fed multiple times of the day and have sharp claws and teeth to attack their prey.

How aggressive were they?

They may have been an aggressive species since they are large species within their family. They posed a threat only if they were put in a position of threat and were known to occasionally engage in fights with other species.

Did you know...

Tyrannosaurus rex was the most ferocious dinosaur ever and had the strongest bite ever.

The longest dinosaur name is Micropachcephalosaurus. This was found in China. This dinosaur found in China was a herbivore.

What does 'Sinotyrannus' mean?

The word Sinotyrannus stands for 'Chinese tyrant'. This is probably a reference to where the fossil of these species was found, in China. An incomplete specimens fossil was found in the Jiufotang formation of Liaoning, China. They are a member of the genus large basal tyrannosauroids. Their classification is phyllum chordata, order Saurischis, family proceratosauridae, and genus proceratosaurid tyrannosauroid. Sinotyrannus is a genus of proceratosaurid tyrannosauroid.

Did Sinotyrannus have sharp teeth?

Yes, these species have sharp teeth called serrated teeth and this is specifically useful since they are carnivorous beings and found it easy to catch their prey and consume them. They have different types of teeth similar to humans for different purposes. The teeth in the front are different from the ones in the back of their mouth. You could observe this better if you observe a fossil installation of these species or observe their bone structure online.
