The siblings of Amancio are Josefa Ortega, Pilar Ortega, and Antonio Ortega, and his brother's name is unknown. He was born in Busdongo de Arbas and raised in Tolosa, Gipuzkoa of Spain.

Amancio Ortega began working in a garment shop in La Coruna at 13 because his mother (Josefina) was a homemaker and his father (Antonio) was a railroad worker in northwestern Spain. He began manufacturing women's bathrobes in 1963 with the help of his siblings and soon-to-be-wife Rosalia Mera, who hand-stitched some of the initial pieces in their house.
He established Confecciones Goa in 1972 to market quilted bathrobes. Amancio opened his first Zara store in 1975; currently, Zara is a subsidiary of the Inditex conglomerate, of which Ortega owns 59.29%. Zara store was first opened in A Coruna, Spain. He transformed the chain into a holding company called Inditex a decade later. Amancio and Mera divorced, and she was Inditex's second-largest shareholder until her death in August 2013 from a brain hemorrhage.
Ortega expanded into Portugal, France, and the United States from 1988 to 1990. In the following decade, he established the Bershka and Pull&Bear brands and acquired Stradivarius and Massimo Dutti. In a public offering in 2001, Inditex raised 2.4 billion euros ($2.7 billion). By 2010, the corporation has over 5,000 outlets in 77 countries. Zara, Zara Home, Massimo Dutti, Tempe, Stradivarius, Kiddy's Class, Bershka, and Pull & Bear are the brands that have more than 6000 stores.
In Europe, Amancio Ortega is well known for running Inditex. Inditex, which includes Zara and manufacturing units, was created in 1985. Ortega declared his impending retirement from Inditex in 2011, the parent firm of the Zara chain, and announced Pablo Isla, who was Inditex's vice-president and CEO, to succeed him and Ortega stepped down as Inditex's chairman. In 2016, he held over 60% of Inditex, the holding company for Zara and other associated brands. Inditex stated in November 2021 that his daughter Marta Ortega Pérez would take over as chairperson in April 2022.
