A toadfish is also known as an ugly toad or a dogfish. Toadfish have a broad head and a wide mouth with thick flaps of skin around their mouth. They have eyes on their head and are olive-brown or pale in color. They are heavy-bodied fish with a large mouth and strong teeth.
A toadfish can be a dangerous fish as some toadfish have poisonous bodies and flesh. Some toadfish also have light organs on their sides and belly and have hollow and venomous spines in their dorsal fins and gills. Poisonous toadfish are able to produce a chemical called tetrodotoxin which creates poison on their flesh and which makes them very dangerous for other animals and humans.

A toadfish is a marine animal that belongs to the family of Batrachoidiformes fish.
A toadfish is a fish that lives deep inside the water. It belongs to the class Actinopterygii.
There are about 80 species of toadfish in the world. The Batrachoidiformes species of fish are classified as toadfish as they are fish that live at the bottom of the ocean. The toadfish name is also applied to the family of Tetraodontidae fish and the family of Psychrolutidae fish. Toadfish are divided into three different groups: true toadfishes (such as the oyster toadfish, Opsanus tau), venomous toadfish, and midshipmen toadfish.
Toadfish are marine animals and they are found in the vast oceans and seas, preferring warm waters. Some are also found in freshwater bodies too. They are a fish species that can live in very poor conditions and can stay alive on very little food.
A toadfish's habitat is found in the vegetative, brown, muddy bottom waters where they can stay hidden from their predators. The oyster toadfish is an unusually shaped, large-headed fish whose appearance is somewhat similar to the toad and oyster toadfish like to live inside oyster reefs on the rocky, sandy, and muddy bottoms, or in shoal waters, among eelgrass, hollows, or dens where they can stay hidden.
Toadfish are solitary animals as they like to live and hunt alone. Toadfish are the prey of many other aquatic animals like sharks and dolphins so they live alone to reduce their chances of being caught. They have to stay hidden for their whole life.
Their lifespan differs with each species. For example, the oyster toadfish can live for two to four years whereas the smooth toadfish can live up to 13 years of age. The average age of toadfish is 10 years for females and 12 years for males.
For the reproduction process, both male and female toadfish produce unique sounds to attract each other. The male makes longer courtship calls than the female. After the mating process, the female lays sticky and large eggs on a nest made by the male toadfish, and then the female toadfish leaves the eggs. The male toadfish guards and takes care of the eggs until they hatch and then teaches the young fish to live on their own. After learning this, the young toadfish begin to live alone.
The toadfish's conservation status is currently Least Concern, which means they are not at risk of becoming extinct or endangered soon. One species of toadfish is listed as Endangered by the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 as their numbers have been steadily reducing.
Toadfish have a broad head, a wide mouth, and thick barbels or flaps of skin around their mouth. They are brown in color. Barbels are feelers that are used for the senses of taste, touch, and smell. Their eyes are on the top of their head and their face looks upward all the time. Some toadfish have hollow and venomous spines in their dorsal fin and gilL (The dorsal fin is the one that runs along the midline of the back). Some toadfish, including the brown gulf toadfish, look ugly and as though they might be dangerous but are not venomous, just their appearance is strange.
Toadfish are not cute and they are known as ugly fish. Some toadfish are highly poisonous due to the tetrodotoxin present in their body and flesh, and eating or touching them may result in death.
Toadfish are very talkative amongst each other, They produce special sounds to attract their mates. For example, the oyster toadfish (Opsanus tau) produces the sound of boat whistles to attract mates. Male toadfish also make short sounds like a grunt. Recent scientific studies also suggest that toadfish can use smells to communicate, more specifically, the smell of their urine.
The maximum size of a toadfish can be 17 in (43.2 cm) long. But the toadfish usually surpass 15 in (38 cm) in length. They are about 10 times smaller than common dolphins.
The speed at which a toadfish can swim has never been discovered and their movement pattern is complex.
The weight of all different types of toadfish, including the oyster toadfish and the gulf toad fish, has not been determined.
There are no different names for males and females in different species of toadfish.
A baby toadfish is often described as a young toadfish, but there is no specific name for a baby toadfish.
A toadfish can stay alive on very little food and the main prey of these fishes is crustaceans and mollusks. When toadfish are young, they start eating small fishes and crabs.
Toadfish are very dangerous as many of them have poisonous flesh. Their body contains a poisonous chemical known as tetrodotoxin which is a very dangerous poison for humans and many animals. This poison is more deadly than many spiders' poisons and a human can become seriously sick from this so-called puffer poison. It can even result in the victim's death.
A toadfish is not a good pet as many of them are very poisonous and dangerous. They like to live in the deepest parts of the ocean, in well-hidden places and they cannot come in contact with a human without getting scared.
Male toadfish can make a loud fog horn sound underwater to attract a female toadfish for mating.
Male toadfish take on an important role in the raising of these fish's young. After laying eggs, the female toadfish leaves these eggs with the male toadfish and leaves. When the eggs hatch, the young toadfish stay attached to the eggs inside the yolk for some time. When the fishes have absorbed the energy that they can from the yolk, the young toadfish can learn to swim and hunt in their habitat with the help of their father.
Some toadfish are edible! These, of course, are those without the presence of the chemical tetrodotoxin.
Both these fishes can inflate themselves with water and air and both can be poisonous to touch due to the presence of tetrodotoxin.
A toadfish's call for mating sounds like the horn of a ship and their swimbladders are believed to be the fastest known vertebrate muscles. This swimbladder makes a sound, but the sound produced is inefficient because the sides and bottom of their bladder move in opposite directions, and this movement means that the sound decays continuously.
