Ness also bowled semi-professionally, using the winnings to buy a 1947 Harley-Davidson Knucklehead that he tweaked into his first motorcycle. The designer passed away on March 22, 2019, after a long illness, at the age of 79.

Later, he also worked as a furniture mover and post office employee. Additionally, Ness participated in semi-pro bowling leagues, using the money earned from those competitions to purchase his first motorcycle, a 1947 Harley-Davidson Knucklehead, which he later modified.

Ness was an artist in the motorcycle world, best known for his unique designs and paintwork. His earliest customs were created in the garage of his house in San Leandro, California, but by the beginning of the 1970s, he had relocated to a shop on East 14th Street. As Ness created new custom bikes, his popularity increased with his displays at bike shows, which were later highlighted in motorcycle magazines. After creating custom motorbikes for over three decades, his company, Arlen Ness Motorcycles, relocated to a building in Dublin, California, with a museum showcasing more than 40 of his custom bikes. The Untouchable, the dual motor Two Bad, the Ferrari Cycle, the '57 Chevy inspired Ness-Stalgia, the Bugatti-like Smooth-Ness, the Discovery Channel's Biker Build-Off bike Top Banana, and his jet-powered Mach Ness are all featured in the museum. Inspired by Jay Leno's turbine-powered motorcycle, Ness created the Mach Ness, a motorcycle with a jet-powered helicopter engine that was released in 2005. Carl Brouhard designed the layout, idea, color, and graphics, and Bob Monroe built the bodywork out of hand-crafted aluminum.
