Baji Rao I, also known as Baji Rao Ballal Balaji Bhat, was an eminent figure in the history-making of the Maratha Empire of the Shahu I clan.
He also has been represented in several Bollywood movies, including 'Baji Rao Mastani' which depicts the story of his love life. Although bits and pieces of his heroism were shown, most of it went unseen.
Baji Rao was an Indian prime minister or Peshwa, whose rule extended to 1740, beginning in 1720. He succeeded Vishvanath Bhat, his father, and played a massive role in the acquisitions that ultimately set the sun over the Mughal Empire under the rule of the Mughal ruler, Muhammad Shah. He was the one who built the Maratha Army and was famed for military campaigns.
Baji Rao I was so powerful that he fought over 41 battles and lost none. He was handed over the role of Peshwa at the young age of 19. Baji Rao's achievements include military conquests and constructive diplomacy. His outstanding abilities also include diplomatically creating alliances with several other rulers, including Rajput princes, resulting in supremacy in southern India and preponderant influence in northern India. He continued his efficient ruling until 1740, when he was succeeded by his son Balaji Baji Rao.

He is best known for his clash with Nizam Ul Mulk which led to the Battle of Palkhed and ultimately led to Baji Rao's victory. He is also known for fighting the battle of Bundelkhand with Mughal Governor Muhammad Khan Bangash and for the Malwa Campaign.
Baji Rao's military campaigns were no joke. It is known he fought over a lot of battles and lost none. He is also known for playing a huge role in expanding the Maratha Empire. Baji Rao was one of the first to establish the weaknesses of the Mughals and as a diplomat he managed to get hold of a lot of resources and build a strong Maratha force.

  • Baji Rao had a meet-up with Jai Singh from Udaipur and the latter was able to attain the favor of both Baji Rao and Mughals. Later, he was also able to restore the great fortress of Mandu.
  • Baji Rao's biggest adversary was Nizam Ul Mulk who was a part of the Mughal seated at what is now Hyderabad and dismissed the right of Marathas to collect Chauth in the Deccan.
  • He provoked the Marathas and made a surprise attack which resulted in the battle of Palkhed. The battle resulted in Nizam being forced to sign the treaty to bow down to the Maratha Empire.
  • After the defeat, Marathas were able to plant permanent camps and take over much of the country beyond the southern borders of the Narmada river.
  • Baji Rao was so powerful that he was even able to defeat one of the strongest generals of the Dabhade clan, Trimbak Rao. Baji Rao I also granted 28 and a half Parganas in Malwa, to Malhar Rao Holkar, who was the only officer other than Ranoji that served Baji Rao.
