With their home field in Baltimore, the Baltimore Ravens is regarded as one of the best professional teams in American football history.

The Baltimore Ravens team plays in the North Division of the American Football Conference (AFC North Division) of the National Football League (NFL) and is popularly known for their excellent defense techniques. The team got its name as inspiration from a famous Edgar Allan Poe poem and after overwhelming support of Ravens fans in a telephone poll survey.

Despite being a relatively young franchise, the Ravens has also been one of the more successful football clubs in the country with two NFL championship titles under its belt.
 

History of Baltimore Ravens Football Team

The history of the Baltimore Ravens is fascinating. The Baltimore Colts played in Baltimore between 1953 and 1984.

  • After realizing the team's financial struggles, Art Modell, the owner of Cleveland Browns, proposed relocating the franchise from Cleveland to Baltimore in 1995. However, this move was not well received by many.
  • The settlement between the club and the city of Cleveland was established after Modell agreed to leave all the history and records in Cleveland for his replacement team. 
  • The Baltimore Club was then established in 1996 and the final control of this professional team by the replacement personnel happened in 1999.
  • Originally, the name, Baltimore Ravens, was inspired by a famous Edgar Allan Poe poem entitled 'The Raven'. The name was hugely supported by a telephone poll as well.
  • The Ravens played their first game at the Memorial Stadium, where more than 64,000 fans gathered. This is a record number of fans at any Baltimore sporting event, making this team history more interesting.
  • The first draft selection was linebacker Ray Lewin, one of the dominant players in NFL history.
  • From 1996 to 2018, Ozzie Newsome led the Ravens organization.
  • Logos and uniforms help define the distinctness of any sports team. Over the years, multiple modifications have been made to the Ravens logo and uniform to lend an aesthetic appeal to its players.
  • Initially, the Ravens' 1996 logo featured a Baltimore 'B' seal. These logos were placed on Ravens' helmets. Later in 1999, the new Ravens logo was modified to a purple Raven with a 'B'. This logo has been featured on the helmets ever since.
  • The standard Baltimore Ravens uniforms, introduced in 1999, had a combination of purple jerseys and white pants. The authentic 1996 uniform combination of a white jersey with white pants is still worn for some of the away games.
  • In 2008, the team revealed another uniform combination that players wear in away games and at the season home-opener. This included purple jerseys with black pants.
  • The white jersey-and-pants combinations are usually worn for away games. Ravens can be seen wearing the white jersey and black pants combination when playing their first home game every season.
  • This first-game uniform tradition was started in 2008 under the mentorship of the present head coach John Harbaugh.
  • Ravens also has a mascot named Poe and is a Raven. Fans often call this mascot the flock.

Art Modell is credited as the first owner of the Baltimore Ravens and continued to be the owner for another nine years since its inauguration in 1996.

  • The present majority owner of the Baltimore Ravens is Stephen J. Bisciotti. Bisciotti is an American business executive and is listed as the top 400 richest Americans in a recent ranking.
  • The team is officially headquartered at the Owing Mills, Maryland, USA. This headquarter is also commonly known as The Castle, or Baltimore Ravens Training complex.
  • The Baltimore Ravens stadium is the M & T Bank Stadium, located in Baltimore, Maryland.
  • The current net worth of the Baltimore Ravens is $3.4 million.

NLF Championships Won By Baltimore Ravens

Ever since its inception, Baltimore Ravens has been one of the successful American franchises who qualified for and won many championship titles. They are prime rivals with the Cleveland Browns, Washington Redskins, and Pittsburgh Steelers.

  • NFL's Baltimore Ravens have won Super Bowl championship titles twice.
  • Ravens won their first NFL season at the 2000 NFL season against the New York Giants. This title made the Ravens the fourth Baltimore-based professional football team to win a league championship.
  • Their second NFL championship title came after a 12-year haul at the Super Bowl XLVII against the San Francisco 49ers in 2013.
  • The team has qualified for various playoffs, including 2001, 2003, 2006, 2012, and 2020 seasons as well as other Pro Bowl seasons.

  • Some prominent defenders of Baltimore Ravens include Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs, Lardarius Webb, Tony Siragusa, Jonathan Ogden, and Rod Woodson.
  • Many Ravens defensive coordinators have later gone on to be NFL head coaches, including Marvin Lewis, Rex Ryan, Chuck Pagano, and Mike Nolan.
  • While the team is known for its powerful defense, some quarterbacks are also famous for their offensive skills. Trent Dilfer, Joe Flacco, Kyle Boller, and Todd Heap are notable quarterbacks who are praised for their offense. Ed Reed has also set an NFL record of the longest interception return.
  • Rod Woodson of Baltimore ravens has also been listed in the Football Hall of Fame.
  • Peter Boulware has been inducted into the Ravens Ring of Honor and has won many accolades, including the 1997 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.
  • The first head coach of the Ravens was Ted Marchibroda.
