Ben Folds pursued his schooling at Richard J. Reynolds High School, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Along with the education there, he was also a part of several bands at school, and he played as a drummer, pianist, and bassist. After his schooling, Ben Folds achieved a percussion scholarship at the University of Miami's Frost School of Music. However, he had to drop out later because he failed to impress the jury and ended up losing his scholarship.

Later, he worked on piano, learning its techniques for six months. In 1985, after leaving Miami, Ben Folds enrolled for the fall semester at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, where he pursued his further education and his music along with it.
