About Ben Sheets

Ben Michael Sheets was a former Major League Baseball (MLB) starting pitcher who played for Milwaukee Brewers, Oakland Athletics, and Atlanta Braves.

He was named four times in All-star games while a member of the Brewers from 2001 to 2008. However, a series of elbow injuries forced him to retire in 2012.

After completing high school, he went on to play college baseball at Northeast Louisiana University. In the summer of 1998, he played collegiate summer baseball in the Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL) with the Wareham Gatemen team, and in 1999, he played with the Orleans Cardinals team. Ben used to throw a four-seam fastball, a curveball, and a changeup that arrived in the mid-70s. He also had an excellent command of his three pitches, evident by the outstanding strikeout-walk ratios over the seasons.

He bats right and pitches right and once had struck out twenty batters at a baseball game in college. Since then, Ben has been a known name in the baseball game and has earned numerous accolades. Ben Sheets was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the first round of the 1999 draft and started as a Minor League professional with the Ogden Raptors of the Pioneer League. He did not stay very long in the Rookie ball and, on August 9, 1999, was promoted to Class A Stockton of California League. For the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Ben Sheets was in the United States National Team and led the team to win a gold medal.

Ben Sheets made his MLB debut with Milwaukee Brewers on April 5, 2001, and was promoted to the Brewers' starting rotation with a 4.76 ERA (Earned Run Average). By 2004, he established himself as a strikeout threat and compiled 264 strikeouts to finish third in the NL behind Randy Johnson and Johan Santana. On June 13, 2004, he struck out three batters on nine pitches in the third inning of a 5-4 loss to the Houston Astros. He became the 26th NL pitcher and 35th Pitcher in the Major league history to achieve the nine-strike/three strikeout half-inning.

He then joined the Oakland Athletics with a one-year $10 million + $2 million incentives contract. However, due to his elbow injuries, he missed the remaining seasons.

On July 1, 2012, Ben signed a minor league contract with the Atlanta Braves to make a comeback to the major leagues. Nearly after two years, Ben made his first minor league start with Mississippi Braves. Finally, after a brief stint with Atlanta Braves, he ended his career.

Currently, he is a part-owner of the Milwaukee Admirals in the American Hockey League. Since 2013 he has served as a volunteer baseball coach at his alma mater, the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
