At the end of the preseason, Ben Tate was kept as the opening-day backup to Ward due to a hamstring injury that happened to Foster. In his NFL debut, Tate did terrifically. Ben Tate rushed for 116 yards and had his first NFL touchdown on 24 carries.

Ben Tate completed the 2011 regular season with four rushing touchdowns and 942 rushing yards in 175 attempts (a 5.4 yards per carrying average, which is the third-highest in the NFL) and 98 total receiving yards in the 15 total games he played. Two of which Ben Tate started when it was week three against the team New Orleans Saints, and the other was week 17 against the team Tennessee Titans.
