Benny started his music career after serving as an American Naval Soldier in the Vietnam War. Benny Mardones began writing for rock and roll singers like Brenda Lee and Chubby Checker. Later on, Tommy James suggested Benny start recording his written lyrics, and as a result, Benny Mardones tried singing the new songs he wrote. From that moment, Benny Mardones wrote and recorded over a hundred songs.

Benny Mardones' first hit song was the 1980 song 'Into The Light'. He co-wrote this soft rock with American songwriter Robert Tepper and was featured in Benny's album 'Never Run, Never Hide'. This track peaked at #11 on the Billboard Charts and launched Benny Mardones into the limelight.

Benny Mardones said during a TV interview that the song was inspired by a conversation he had with Robert Tepper after seeing one of his neighbors named Heidi take Benny's dog on a walk. Heidi was a 16-year-old girl who lived in Benny's apartment in Spanish Harlem, Riverside Drive in Manhattan, and walked Benny's dog, Zanky(a Basset Hound), for $50 per week.
