He remained mostly undefeated in his twenty-seven years of kickboxing career and won several titles at the world championships. He later entered the film industry as a martial arts choreographer and made guest appearances in several action films.
Since his childhood, he was influenced by his parents, who were professional boxers and wrestlers. He began wrestling in Los Angeles, California, at the age of five. Benny Urquidez comes from a family of boxers and wrestlers. His mother, whom he considers a strong icon in his life, was a professional wrestler, while his father was a renowned boxer. He was born in Los Angeles, California, United States. His parents are of Indian and Spanish-Mexican descent. His sister Lily Rodriguez is also considered to be one of the stalwarts in women's kickboxing. His late brother Reuben Urquidez was also a black belt martial artist like him.
At the age of five, he started participating in boxing and wrestling competitions in Los Angeles. He received his formal training from the renowned martial arts instructor Bill Ryusaki and received his first black belt in martial arts by the age of 14.
He was greatly influenced by martial arts legend Bruce Lee in his childhood. He witnessed him demonstrating a one-inch punch move in one of the wrestling tournaments that got his opponent flying in the air. This fascinated young Benny Urquidez and fueled his inner desire to participate in such wrestling tournaments.

Benny Urquidez has a record of being the world champion six times in five different weight divisions. He remained primarily undefeated in his kickboxing career and is considered the pioneer of full-contact fighting in the United States. He dominated the sports in the prime years of his career and earned the title of 'Sensei' and 'The jet'. After he retired from kickboxing, he made frequent cameos in various action films featuring notable actors like Jackie Chan, John Cusack, and Jean-Claude Van Damme. He will always be remembered for his fight scene against Jackie Chan and Sensei Benny in the movie 'Wheels on Meals'.
Benny Urquidez started his career by performing martial arts in the non-contact style but later transitioned into a full-contact karate competitor in 1974. His career spanned over three decades, and he holds a record of having six world titles. He has mastered nine different styles of karate, namely Kajukenbo, Judo, Taekwondo, Aikido Shotokan, Lima Lama, Jujutsu, American Kenpo, and White Crane Kung Fu.
He gained the reputation of being a colorful fighter when he started competing in the point circuit in 1964. He lost a match to Brian Strain in the Santa Monica Kempo Open in 1972. In 1974, he lost to Joe Lewis in the PAWAK tournament. In the same year, he had a match organized by PKA against Howard Jackson, where he was declared the winner. He fought with John Natividad in the non-contact style but lost by one point. During this time, he started adopting the full contact style and achieved success in the World Series of Martial Arts Championship. He was given the title of Competitor of the year by the Black Belt Magazine in 1978.
He fought under a lot of well-known kickboxing organizations such as the World Kickboxing Association, Shin Kakutojutsu Federation, and All Japan Kickboxing Association. He holds a record of 58 wins through all his matches, and however, it remains highly disputed.
Although he did not have much experience in Japanese karate, he had given himself the title of 'Sensei', meaning guide in Japanese. In 1977, The All Japan Kickboxing Association started to promote mixed-rule matches between Japanese kickboxers and American karate fighters. Costello and Benny Urquidez became the winners of the American team. Benny's win over Kunimitsu Okao made him a popular face in the Japanese kickboxing arena. He even got featured in a Japanese comic book called ‘The Square Ring.’
In 1978, the first independent event of the Shin-Kakutojutsu Organization was held in Tokyo, featuring Urquidez and Prayout Sittiboonlert, a welterweight Thai Boxer. The rules of the match were not followed, and Urquidez claimed that he got maneuvered under a set of unaccustomed new rules. A rematch was held the following month at the Martial Arts Hall. However, he was unable to turn up for the bout as he could not recover from a high fever from an allergic drug reaction. However, the Star world ratings did not include the bout as a part of his ratings and considered it as a separate sport called Muay Thai.
Since 1980, his ring appearances started to diminish, and he held bouts less frequently compared to his initial days. He held a match with Ivan Sprang in 1984 under modified Muay Thai rules and won in the sixth round. By 1984, he retired from his kickboxing career and dived into the world of acting and martial arts choreography, and began imparting his knowledge of kickboxing to his disciples. Along with Emil Farkas, he had set up the Los Angeles Film Fighting Insitute in 2000 to teach the intricacies of stunt work to martial artists.

Some of his notable achievements include the title of Lightweight Champion in the World Series of Martial Arts Championship in 1974 and 1975. He became the super welterweight world champion of the World Kickboxing Association in 1977 and 1993. He was declared the lightweight world champion by the Professional Karate Association in 1976 and by National Karate League in 1974. Mr. Urquidez was inducted into the World Kickboxing League Hall of Fame in 2013.
