On December 30, 1942, Betty Aberlin was born in New York City, New York, USA to Dr. Edward H. Aberlin. Her father joined the war effort during the Second World War and split from the family soon after he came back. Growing up in a Jewish family post-WW2, Betty often felt out of place being the only one in her family. The idea of race was something that dominated her mindset even as a child.

Betty Aberlin attended public schools in Queens and Staten Island. In 1959, she got her high school diploma from Curtis High School, Staten Island. She then joined Bennington College, where she studied arts, literature, and modern dance and graduated with a bachelor's. Renowned American poet Howard Nemerov and novelist Bernard Malamud studied at Bennington College as well during Aberlin's time there.

Aberlin's debut came through 'Sandhog', a 1954 folk opera produced by Waldo Salt and Earl Robinson. She performed at the Phoenix Theatre, which was an off-Broadway theater in New York City.

Betty started her career in 1968 at the age of 26. The most memorable role during Betty Aberlin's career would be that of Lady Aberlin on 'Mister Rogers' Neighborhood'. The show, known more popularly as just 'Mister Rogers', ran from February 1968–1976, then again from August 1979–2001. For the entire 33 years that the show ran on television, Betty Aberlin played the role of Lady Aberlin, niece to the neighbourhood monarch, King Friday. During the parts of the show that focused on the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, Lady Aberlin (or Lady A, as she was also known) often took the position of the 'main' character. Amid all the puppets, you would expect Lady Aberlin to tower over the other characters, both literally and figuratively. But instead, she was known for being a wise older sister type of figure to the puppets. This aura of hers reached the watchers of the show as well, and she is remembered by long-time fans of the show in that way. She was even a maternal figure to Daniel Tiger.

Betty Aberlin also took up several TV spots. She appeared in 'The Smothers Brothers Show', a comedy TV show revolving around brothers Thomas and Richard Smothers. She was also part of both the theatre and television productions of Elizabeth Swados' 'Alice In Concert'. Betty Aberlin also made appearances in several films by director Kevin Smith, most notably 'Dogma', 'Jersey Girl' and 'Red State'. Betty Aberlin and Kevin Smith are good friends in real life as well. In 1977, Betty Aberlin used to be a volunteer at the cancer ward of a children's hospital in Los Angeles. Subsequently, in 1991, she volunteered to counsel teenage girls at the New York Foundling Hospital. Aberlin also worked at the Chaplain's office on Riker's Island, her responsibility being to arrange resources for the constantly changing population.
