Beulah Louise Henry's first patent was for a vacuum ice cream freezer in 1912. The following year, two further patents were issued in short succession. One was for a handbag, and the other was for an umbrella.
The umbrella came with snap-on removable fabric coverings in a variety of colors. She came to New York City in 1919 after the success of her early creations.
She started two companies named 'Henry Umbrella and Parasol Company' and 'B. L. Henry Company of New York.' During the '20s, she received a slew of additional patents for her early inventions. They were for a spring-limbed doll and sponges with soap in the center. She was also the one who created the sponge-making machine.
Eventually, she shifted her focus to machinery. Throughout the '30s and '40s, she made several improvements to sewing machines and typewriters. During this time, she secured patents for a double-chain stitch sewing machine, a typewriter feeding and aligning device, a bobbin-less sewing machine, and a variety of children's toys.
Beulah Louise Henry was known as 'Lady Edison' by the late '30s and was a well-known prolific inventor. She started working as an inventor at the Nicholas Machine Works in 1939. She also worked as a consultant for several firms, including 'Mergenthaler Linotype' and the 'International Doll Company.'
