Bill was particularly enamored with southern gospel music and would acquire CDs, attend performances, and listen to radio programs. In 1950 and 1951, Bill Gaither, Danny Gaither, Howard Little, and Maurice Gaither formed the Log Cabin Four.

He first focused on music by organizing a gospel band named the Pathfinders with Charlie Hodge of Decatur, Alabama, Danny Gaither, and Vance Windsor. In 1955, after seeing little profitability, he left the band and returned to working at a Cox's food store in Anderson.

In 1956, he registered at Taylor University in Upland, Indiana, and the following year he went to Anderson University to pursue an English degree. In 1959, Gaither graduated from Anderson University after earning his bachelor's degree in English along with a specialization in music. Afterward, he secured a position as an English teacher.

Later, Bill founded the Gaither Trio with his siblings. They sang covers of Christian music because Bill has not become a songwriter at that time. The three achieved much greater success than the Pathfinders ever did.

On April 6, 2001, Bill lost his brother Danny to lymphoma. Nevertheless, the Gaither Vocal Band is on tour presently, and they have three upcoming shows.
