In 1981, after former vice-president Rockefeller did not make it to the presidential election, the republican party had its eye on him for future use and asked him to find a magazine that republican figureheads could contribute. William was persuaded, and in 1986, he launched The Weekly Standard with New York investor Lewis Scooter Libby Jr, who served as its publisher until his 2005 conviction for obstruction of justice and making false statements after the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
