Bill Russell, born on February 12, 1934, in Monroe, Louisiana, was an American basketball player and one of the greatest NBA players.
In his 13 seasons as a player with the Celtics, he won 11 NBA championships. He also became the first African American coach of a major professional sports team in the United States when he was named Celtics coach in 1966 after Auerbach retired after the 1965-1966 NBA title.
It was an unlikely moment for Bill Russell to become a superstar. He was skinny and shy when he entered the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the Boston Celtics, where he played for the rest of his career.
