Bill Schonely was born in Norristown, Pennsylvania, in the United States. He is the first child of his parents, Walter Schonely and Juanita Schonely. Bill is a high school graduate. Bill used to work on a radio show in high school, which opened opportunities for him to work at different radio and television stations. Then, he was selected for the United States Marine Corps, for which he went to Guam. Bill then got shifted to the Armed Forces Radio Show.
In the year 1956, Bill shifted to Seattle. First, he worked with KOMO radio and then made the transition to KOMO TV. Then, in 1959, Bill shifted to KAYO radio. Schonely became the voice on the radio for the Seattle Supersonics in the year 1967. Then, Bill got an approach from the co-founder of the Blazers in April 1970, and he joined the Blazers. On July 1, 1970, Bill shifted to Portland with the other team members to start his journey with the Blazers. Bill called the play-by-play on the radio for the Blazers. Bill then had to leave the Blazers for the day for bypass surgery on his heart. Then, in 2003, Bill returned to the Blazers. He then became the team ambassador of the Blazers at charitable events.
In the year 2000, Bill signed a contract to become the play-by-play announcer of the Portland Beavers. Rip City was the name given to the Portland Trail Blazers by Bill Schonely. In the year 1970, in a game against the Lakers, the phrase 'Rip City' was debuted by Schonely.
