In 1950, Martin took a step towards his professional career when he became the second baseman for the New York Yankees. Martin was renowned for making clutch plays and for making the ultimate game-saving catch in Game 7 in the 1952 world series.
Following this, in 1956, Billy Martin was an All-Star. In 1957, he was traded to the Kansas City Athletics, after which he joined over six different teams in four and a half years. These teams included the Detroit Tigers, The Cincinnati Reds, The Milwaukee Braves, The Cleaveland Indians, and The Minnesota Twins.
In 1961, Martin announced his retirement. He had a batting average of 0.257 and played in 28 World Series games for the Yankees.
Martin was the manager of the Minnesota Twins from 1962 to 1969, the Detroit Tigers from 1971 to 1973, the Texas Rangers from 1974 to 1975, and the Oakland Athletics from 1981 to 1982. He served as the manager of the Yankees for five separate seasons.
