Bob Leyattended Bloomfield High School in Bloomfield, New Jersey. He began his career in broadcasting as a sportscaster and program director at WSOU at Seton Hall University. He interned at WOR-AM in New York City as a production assistant.

Bob Ley graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications. He took numerous modest broadcasting gigs after that. He was the public address announcer for the New York Cosmos soccer club. This was before he earned his first major position with ESPN, only three days after the network's inauguration in 1979.

Bob Ley worked as the Sports Director at Suburban Cablevision TV3 in East Orange, New Jersey. He worked there from the mid-'70s to the late '80s. He co-hosted the award-winning local sports program 'Time In' with Bruce Beck.

In September 1979, Bob Ley joined ESPN. He presented the inaugural broadcast of the NCAA Selection Show in 1980. However, CBS took over the airing two years later, and Ley began hosting ESPN's investigative show 'Outside The Lines' in 1990.

For most of his ESPN career, Bob Ley presented 'SportsCenter.' In August 2004, Bob Ley co-hosted an 'old school' episode with longtime broadcasting partner Charley Steiner. He was also the lead studio presenter for ESPN's coverage of key international professional soccer competitions. This included the 2010 FIFA World Cup, 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup, 2012 UEFA European Championship, and 2016 UEFA European Championship.

Michael Davies and Rog Bennett awarded Ley with the inaugural Men In Blazers Golden Blazer. He received it for lifetime services to American soccer. The Men in Blazers displayed a video of Ley anchoring 'SportsCenter' and showing highlights of the United States men's national soccer team qualifying for the FIFA World Cup in Italy.
