Texas Christian University offered Lilly an athletic scholarship. His teammates dubbed him 'Tiger' at the university. In 1960, Lilly was a unanimous All-American as a senior. Lilly started his career as a defensive end in 1961. However, by the third season of his career, he had been switched to the position of defensive tackle. It was done by Dallas Cowboys coach, Tom Landry.
Lilly made the necessary adjustments and became the focal point of the Dallas Cowboys' famed 'Doomsday Defense.' In 1971, the Dallas Cowboys won Super Bowl VI against the Miami Dolphins. Lilly was picked to participate in 11 Pro Bowl games and was named an All-Pro seven times.
Lilly appeared in 196 consecutive games during the regular season. He only missed one NFL game throughout his career due to a leg ailment. Three weeks later, in December, he re-injured his same hamstring.
Bob Lilly was selected to the NFL's All-Century Team. He was dubbed the finest defensive tackle in NFL history.
Bob was also a member of the National Football League's All-Decade Teams in the '60s and '70s.
