About Bob Probert

Robert Alan Probert was a left-winger for the Toronto Maple Leafs in professional ice hockey.
He was a member of the National Hockey League's Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks. He was named to the Campbell Conference All-Star team in 1987–88.
Probert was known in the game as a fighter and enforcer who was known for his long-running clashes and brawls while playing for both sides. For their tough playing style, Probert and his Detroit Red Wings colleague, Joey Kocur, were dubbed the Bruise Brothers. Aside from his tenacity in the game, which resulted in 3,300 penalty minutes in 935 games, the left-winger also scored 163 goals and assisted on 221 occasions. Probert worked as a Blackhawks radio analyst for a short time after retiring from ice hockey. At the age of 45, he passed away due to a heart attack.

On June 5, 1965, Robert Alan Probert was born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. His father was a police officer.
Probert died from a heart attack on July 5, 2010. While sailing on Lake St. Clair with his children and in-laws, he suffered from significant chest pain and eventually collapsed. He was transferred to Windsor Regional Hospital's Metropolitan Campus, where efforts to resuscitate him failed. Later that afternoon, his death was announced. On July 9, 2010, several prominent ice-hockey figures, including his former teammates and opponents, attended his memorial service in Windsor, Ontario. His family stated on September 25, 2010, that the player's brain would be donated to the Sports Legacy Institute. On April 9, 2017, his family scattered his ashes in the penalty box of the Red Wings, at the final game of the now-defunct Joe Louis Arena in Downtown Detroit.

Robert Alan Probert, a forward in the National Hockey League (NHL), was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. From 1985 to 1994, Probert was a member of the Detroit Red Wings and from 1995 to 2002, he was a member of the Chicago Blackhawks. He was well known for being a fighter and enforcer and he and Joey Kocur formed the Bruise Brothers.
Bob Probert played for the Ontario Hockey League's Brantford Alexanders and the Sault Ste and Marie Greyhounds and Hamilton Steelhawks in 1984–85. Meanwhile, the Detroit Red Wings selected Probert as the fourth choice in the third round of the 1983 NHL Entry Draft. During the 1985–1986 season, he was third in penalty minutes for the Red Wings, with 221 penalty minutes the following season.
After a substance was discovered in his clothing by US Customs authorities at the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel while he was crossing the Detroit-Windsor border in 1989, his career took a back seat. He was arrested and sentenced to three months in a Minnesota federal prison and three months in a halfway house, as well as an indefinite suspension from the NHL. Following his release from prison, the suspension was lifted.
For a brief while after his comeback to the game, Probert served as one of the Red Wings' alternative captains. On July 15, 1994, he was arrested for driving under the influence after colliding with a car in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, while riding his motorcycle. Probert was ruled an unrestricted free agent at this time. On July 19, that year, the Red Wings announced that they would not be extending a contract to Probert.
The Chicago Blackhawks signed Probert on July 23, 1994, while he was in treatment. He scored the final NHL goal at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto on February 13, 1999, while playing for the Chicago Blackhawks. Although his time with the Chicago Blackhawks was not as successful as his time with the Detroit Red Wings, Probert was notable for his physical aggression and long-standing rivalry with a number of other enforcers in the game.
Throughout his career, he was injured multiple times. Following the 2001-02 season, the Chicago Blackhawks placed him on waivers. Later, on November 16, 2002, he elected to unofficially resign in order to work with the Blackhawks' radio broadcasting staff. He finished his on-field career with 3,300 penalty minutes, placing him fifth all-time in NHL penalty minutes.
After a brief time with the Blackhawks radio crew, Probert was forced to return to rehab, as reported in February 2003. In the off-season of 2003, he declared his retirement.
