Career And Professional Highlights

Best Known For…

Shanahan began his professional career with the NHL (National Hockey League) at 18 in 1987. He was selected in the second NHL draft by the New Jersey Devils. He had previously shown a lot of talent and promise playing for the London Knights in the OHL (Ontario Hockey League). During his rookie season, Shanahan played in 65 games and scored 26 points. Brendan proved to be a top scorer in his third NHL season with the New Jersey Devils. He scored 72 goals in 73 games!
He continued to play for the New Jersey Devils until 1991 before signing with the St. Louis Blues for the next four years. Shanahan scored an impressive number of goals in every game he played.
In 1995, the St. Louis Blues traded Shanahan with Chris Pronger of the Hartford Whalers. He played with them only for one season, during which he scored 44 goals. However, the future of the Hartford Whalers was being put into question as a franchise, prompting him to request a change. In 1996, he was initiated into the Detroit Red Wings.
He scored 47 goals in his first season with the Detroit Red Wings and was selected to play in the 1997 NHL All-Star Game. He even helped the Detroit Red Wings win a Stanley Cup, which was their first one since 1955. The Detroit Red Wings, encouraged by their 1996-97 win, emerged as Stanley Cup champions again the following year. Unfortunately, they were eliminated early in the 1999 season but came back stronger than ever in their resurgent season to win the 2001-2002 season Stanley Cup, with Shanahan scoring 37 goals.
During this time, he also won a Winter Olympic gold medal in Salt Lake City and was named on the NHL All-Star Team for the second time. The season proved to be a career-defining one for Shanahan, as he also scored the 1000th point of his career in a game against the Dallas Stars. In the same game, he hit the 500-goal mark, which was the game-winning goal. This contributed to the Detroit Red Wing's success, and they were awarded the President's Trophy for being the top-ranked regular season team.
After the 2005-06 season, Brendan Shanahan became a free agent and ultimately signed a one-year, $4 million deal with the New York Rangers. He began his stint with the Rangers by scoring his 599th and 600th goals in his very first game, becoming only the 15th NHL player in history to reach this benchmark. He remained with the Rangers until 2009 when a dip in his performance led them not to offer him a contract for the next season.
After leaving the New York Rangers, he returned to the New Jersey Devils for the 2009 season, his final year before retiring. He had spent 21 years as an NHL player at that point.
However, the NHL was not done with Brendan Shanahan just yet. Soon after his retirement, the NHL offered him the position of vice president of hockey and business development. He was promoted to senior vice president in 2011, succeeding Colin Campbell.
On April 11, 2014, Brendan Shanahan officially took up the title of president and alternate governor for the Toronto Maple Leafs. At that point, the Toronto Maple Leafs had qualified only once for the playoffs in the past decade and were struggling immensely. Shanahan took the team under his wing and hired a number of executives to help rebuild the team from the ground. His efforts paid off, and the Maple Leafs established themselves as worthy competitors in the NHL once again.
