In 1959, he became the lead sports columnist for the Boston Herald.

Bud Collins worked at the Boston Herald before moving to The Boston Globe in 1963. At The Boston Globe, Bud started doing commentary tournaments for WGBH. In his career, Bud Collins covered the Nationals for NBC in 1964 and the US Open for CBS from 1968-1972.
He worked for NBC for 35 years and became a household name for his commentary at 'Breakfast at Wimbledon'. At NBC, he was famous for 'Breakfast at Wimbledon'. Broadcasted live on weekend mornings, Bud gave a play-by-play and commentary at the tournament’s finals.

In 1994, Bud Collins was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame for his contribution to the sport. In the year 1999, he won the Red Smith Award for outstanding sportswriting.
