Charles Esten was born in 1965 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was the firstborn child of Charles Pushkar and Cynthia Pushkar. Charles's parents got divorced at a young age, and he moved to Alexandria, Virginia, with his mother and younger sister and was raised there. His father was a local businessman.
In 1983, Charles Esten graduated from T. C. Williams High School, Alexandria, where he played football for the school team named Titans; after a decade, the film 'Remember the Titans' was made. He then studied at the College of William and Mary and graduated in 1987 with a degree in economics. At William and Mary, the comedian was the lead vocalist in the local band 'N'est Pas.' He was the lead vocalist from 1985–88.
