Chris Hero and his friend Adam Ghazee started operating under the guidance of a local promoter named Gary Goffinet and trained under Bo Dacious. He also had training from Charlie Fulton at Monster Factory.

Taking Matt Stryker's instructions in 1999, Chris Hero went to train at Les Thatcher's wrestling camp in Cincinnati from May 1999 through November 1999.

Between 2000-2007, Chris Hero was a professional Independent Wrestling Association Mid-South wrestler.

He made his Combat Zone Wrestling debut in May 2002, facing off against Claude Marrow Jr., best known as Ruckus.
