Johnson was drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft after he ran a record-breaking 4.24 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine. He was a Pro Bowl selection in each of his first three years in the league. In 2009, Johnson won the NFL rushing title with 2,006 yards, becoming the sixth player to rush for over 2,000 yards in a single season.

Throughout his career, Johnson played for the Tennessee Titans, New York Jets, and Arizona Cardinals. His career was marked by impressive speed and agility, earning him the nickname CJ2K after his 2,000-yard season. He retired in 2019 after signing a one-day contract with the Tennessee Titans.

Besides football, Johnson was also a standout track star at Olympia High School. In his senior year, he finished second behind Walter Dix in the 100 m race at the 2004 Florida 4A state championships. He also recorded personal bests of 10.38 and 21.28 (the nation's 24th fastest in 2004) in the 100 m and 200 m races respectively. Johnson also anchored the 4 × 100 m relay team that won the Golden South and Golden West National Championships.

At East Carolina University, Johnson majored in communications and played for the East Carolina Pirates. In his senior year, he broke out for 2,960 all-purpose yards and 24 touchdowns.
