Born on December 19, 1924, in the Bronx, New York City, Cicely Tyson was a professional American actress.
Though Cicely was born in the Bronx, she relocated with her parents to East Harlem, New York City. From the Caribbean island of Nevis, Cicely's parents raised her and were devoutly religious.
Cicely Tyson was spotted by one fashion editor from Ebony magazine and swiftly ascended to the peak of the modeling world thanks to her amazing appearance. In 1958, she made her stage debut in Vinnette Carroll's play 'Dark Of The Moon' at the Harlem YMCA.  In the 1959 movies 'Odds Against Tomorrow' and 'The Last Angry Man', including the 1960 comedy 'Who Was That Lady?' Tyson had minor appearances.
She began appearing in off-Broadway production plays in 1956 and had her first acting role in the movie 'Carib Gold'. Before being cast as Portia in 'The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter' (1968), she had minor supporting roles in feature films. Cicely was a member of 'The Blacks' the original cast of French playwright Jean Genet's 'The Blacks' in the early 1960's. Stephanie Virtue Secret-Rose Diop was her character. With 1,408 performances, the production became the decade's longest-running off-Broadway production non-musical. NBC's brief civil rights-themed courtroom drama 'Sweet Justice' featured her as a Southern attorney from 1994 to 1995.
Cicely didn't feature onscreen in a long time due to her commitment to solely portraying strong, positive representations of black women, but she is undeniably one of the most accomplished and gorgeous actresses ever to have blessed the screen and stage.

Clark Atlanta University, Howard University, Columbia University, and Morehouse College all bestowed honorary degrees on Tyson. In 2009, the Cicely Tyson School of Performing and Fine Arts in East Orange, New Jersey was named after her.

When Cicely was 17 years old, she had a daughter. Cicely and Kenneth Franklin got married on December 27, 1942, when she was 18 years old. Her partner left her within around 18 months of marriage. In 1956, the couple separated legally. When Miles Davis, a jazz trumpeter, and dancer Frances Davis were separating in the 1960's, Cicely began seeing him. Davis informed the press in 1967 that he planned to marry Cicely once his divorce was settled in March 1968, although in September of the same year, he married singer Betty Davis.
In 1978, Cicely and Davis married on November 26, 1981, at the house of actor Bill Cosby, in a ceremony officiated by Atlanta mayor Andrew Young.  Davis credits Cicely with saving his life but also assisting him in his recovery from a bad addiction.  Until she ended the relationship in 1989, they lived in Malibu, California, as well as New York City.

She also starred in the TV dramas 'Roots' (1977), 'King' (1978), and 'A Woman Called Moses' (1978). Her portrayal in 'Trip To Bountiful' earned her a Tony Award for 'Best Actress in a Play' in 2014. For her contributions to the entertainment business, modeling career, and advocacy of civil rights, Cicely received the NAACP's 2010 Spingarn Medal.

She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016 by Barack Obama. She was honored with a Peabody Award for 'Career Achievement' in 2020. She was elected to the Television Hall of Fame the following year. Cicely got four Black Reel Awards, three Primetime Emmy Awards, one Screen Actors Guild Award, a Peabody Award, one Tony Award, and an honorary Academy Award for her contributions to her acting career.

Tyson began her modeling career after being spotted by an 'Ebony' magazine photographer. She was a vegetarian, a runner, an active meditator, and a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in addition to being a mother and an award-winning actor.
