The gospel singer initially gained fame as the backup singer for artists like Roy Hamilton, Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, and Dionne Warwick. Following her success as a backup singer, Cissy Houston went on to perform solo and released a number of albums such as 'Step Aside For A Lady' in 1980, 'Think It Over' in 1978, and many more.

Cissy Houston developed an interest in music from a very young age primarily from her family members as many of her family members were singers and thus she too was encouraged to explore a similar path. Cissy Houston is also recognized as the mother of the late singer, Whitney Houston.
