Cris was born in Curitiba, Brazil to parents Jurandir Venâncio Justino and Bersima G.A. Moraes. Her parents were divorced when she was at a very young age. She has a brother named Rafael.
Although much information about her early life, high school, and college is not available, she started playing handball at the mere age of 12. It was the beginning of her sports career, and she participated at a national level in Brazil. Later, she has received several scholarships due to her sports access to various universities.
She pursued physical education at Paraná, Curitiba. She was soon discovered by a Chute Boxe Academy trainer Rudimar Fedrigo who inspired her to join the world of fighting. She received American citizenship in the year 2016.

Cris made her professional MMA debut in 2005 when she was 19 years old. Her first fight was against the BJJ champion Erica Peas, but she eventually lost the match by submission in the first round. Cris Cyborg saw her first victory against Vanessa Porto, and her subsequent matches were all wins in the Brazilian Storm Samurai by her technical knockout finish in the first round. She went on to defeat Shayna Baszler and Yoko Takahashi in her early career. Cris Cyborg earned her BJJ purple belt in 2009 under Cristiano Marcello.
From 2009 onwards, Cris Cyborg signed on with Strikeforce, winning her debut match against Hitomi Akano as she defeated her in the third round. Cyborg fought for the Women's Featherweight Championship against Gina Carano and defeated her in the first round, winning the title. She defended her Strikeforce title until 2011 by defeating Marloes Coenen and Jan Finney. She renewed her contract with Strikeforce and went on to defeat Hiroko Yamanaka in the first round.
By 2013, Cris Cyborg made a comeback by signing on with Invicta Fighting Championship, where she defeated Fiona Muxlow by TKO in her debut match. She defeated Marlos Coenen and became the first Invicta FC Featherweight Champion. She defended her title by winning a match against Jennifer Colomb in Las Vegas but lost to Jorina Baars. In 2015, she again defended her title by defeating Charminar Tweet and Faith Van Duin.
She signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship or the UFC in the year 2015. She defeated Leslie Smith in her debut match at the UFC 198. In the same year, at UFC 214, Cris faced the Invicta FC Bantamweight Champion Tonya Evinger and defeated her to earn her first UFC championship. Later, Cyborg defeated Holly Holm, Yana Kunitskaya, and Felicia Spencer at the UFC grounds. The UFC president did not renew the contract with Cris, and so she signed with Bellator MMA in 2019. She defeated Julia Budd to win the Bellator Women's Featherweight Championship in 2020. She has defended her Bellator MMA fighter title by defeating Arlene Blencowe, Leslie Smith, and Sinead Kavanagh. She has restored her Bellator MMA title till now.
