The Soviet Union again made a hydrogen bomb in the year 1953, and this was even more powerful. What was the primary event that started the so-called cold war arms race? It began when America dropped atomic bombs on two Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

As the United States successfully used its nuclear capabilities to end World War II, the Soviet Union also entered the arms race to strengthen its position. Moreover, after the end of World War II, the United States developed a containment policy to prevent the spread of communism into Europe and other regions of the world. This marked the start of the cold war between the world's superpowers.
