Dale Chihuly was born in Tacoma, Washington. He was born to George Chihuly and Viola Chihuly. Viola was a homemaker, while George was a union organizer and a meatpacker. When he was in high school in 1957, his brother died in a flight training incident, and one year later, his father also died. Dale's mother encouraged him to continue his studies sincerely. Dale graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and then joined the College of Pugel Sound in 1859. In 1960, he transferred to the University of Wisconsin. In 1965, he completed his bachelor's degree in Interior design from the University of Wisconsin. From the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he got his Master of Science degree in 1967. He got a Master of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design on a Fulbright Fellowship in Venice in 1968.
He was first introduced to glass sculpture during his time at the University of Washington.
Dale Chihuly had a car accident blinding his left eye in 1976.

Dale was hired to start a glass department at RISD in 1969. In 1971, Dale founded the Pilchuck Glass School in Washington with help from John Hauberg and Anne Gould Hauberg. Dale, in 1976 went through a car accident that resulted in damaging his left eye. It was a severe setback. In 1979, he dislocated his shoulder and was unable to hold the glassblowing pipe and was unable to practice his craft anymore, so he decided to hire some skilled blowers to do that part. He has worked on many different products since then.
