In the '50s, James Dalton Trumbo, the Oscar-winning screenwriter, was among the ten directors backlisted from Hollywood when he refused to reveal his colleagues' identities who were supposedly involved in communist activities. As a result, Dalton Trumbo had to use different names to publish his work as he could no longer make movies using his own name.
Among his uncredited works, two films earned Academy Awards: 'Roman Holiday' and 'The Brave One,' which he wrote under the pen name Trumbo. James Dalton Trumbo was born in Montrose, Colorado, on December 9, 1905, to Maud Trumbo and Orus Bonham Trumbo. When he was three years old, his family moved to Grand Junction, Colorado, where he attended Grand Junction High School.
After graduating from high school, Trumbo joined the University of Colorado at Boulder. Later, in 1924, his family again changed homes to California. Shortly after they arrived in California, his father passed away, leaving him to sustain his mother and two sisters. Dalton Trumbo worked at night in a bakery and attended the University of California in the morning to make ends meet. In 1928, he joined the University of Southern California.
