Evins was Cracker Barrel's chief executive officer from 1969-2001. After 2001, he became the chairman until his retirement in 2004. Between 2001-2004, he also served as a chairperson of the board of directors of Castle Heights Military Academy.
Before co-founding Cracker Barrel, Evin worked as an assistant in his family's oil company. His uncle, Joe L. Evins, sat in the United States House of Representatives as a 15-term congressman. In the '50s, Dan worked as a teller in his brother's bank in Lebanon.

Charity Work

In 1988, Dan Evins led the drive to purchase and restore Mitchell House, located in Lebanon, through Cracker Barrel. The company spent $2 million to restore the Mitchell home. The Mitchell home was made into a dormitory for elementary-age students at Castle Heights Military Academy.
Under the Cracker Barrel brand, Dan Evins supported various charities. He supported the Gulf Coast in 2005 following Hurricane Katrina and the relief efforts of the 2010 Nashville flood. In addition, the firm has provided scholarships and sponsorships for The National Black MBA Association for 100 black men of America.
