From 1996 to 1999 and from 2004 to 2006, Danilo Medina has also been the President of the Dominican Republic's Chief of Staff.

Danilo Medina is also one of the members of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD). Danilo Medina defeated Hipolito Mejia and, with 51.24% of the votes, won the May 2012 Dominican Presidential Election. Danilo Medina won the Dominican Presidential Election on May 15, 2016, and defeated Luis Abinader, the PRM candidate and the opposition leader, with 61.80% of the votes. The second term of Danilo Medina has been said to be transparent, humane, and goal-driven to the supporters. Danilo Medina visits impoverished rural areas throughout the country. With a 65% approval rate, Medina also finished his second term.

Danilo Medina was born on November 10, 1951, in Arroyo Cano, in the southwest region of the Dominican Republic in the province of San Juan. His father was Juan Pablo Medina de los Santos (1918–2019) and his mother was Amelia Sánchez Abreu (1931–2004). He has seven siblings, and he is the oldest of them all. Danilo Medina is the founder of the UASD's San Juan de la Maguana branch of the Frente Revolucionario Estudiantil Nacionalista. Danilo Medina has been the student leader from the age of 18. The Partido de la Liberación Dominicana was founded by Juan Bosch in 1973 which was joined by Danilo. Danilo Medina is a graduate magna cum laude from the Instituto Tecnológico Santo Domingo (INTEC) in Economics. He graduated in 1984. In 1983, Danilo became a member of PLD's Central Committee. Medina was elected as the deputy of the National Congress in 1986.

The two brothers of Medina are currently under investigation for allegations of corruption. They are also said to have benefited under the presidency of Medina and are behind multiple business contracts with the State. Medina's family has also been accused of using family and political ties to collect wealth during his President's term. Danilo Medina became a member of the Dominican Liberation Party's Political Committee in 1990, together with Juan Temístocles Montás and Leonel Fernández. Domina was also presented with the opportunity to be the Chamber of Deputies' President by the political organization in the Dominican Republic. He became its President for four years and was in office from 1990 to 1994, and became the Presidency's Secretary of State from 1996 to 1999 and from 2004 to 2006.

Danilo Medina played a crucial role during the congressional negotiations to resolve the political impasse of 1994. The close finish between José Francisco Peña Gómez and Joaquín Balaguer gave birth to a significant conflict with the accusation of fraud from both sides. In the 1966 election, José Francisco Peña Gómez was defeated by Leonel Fernández in the second round. Danilo has been bestowed with the position of the leading negotiator and strategist of the PLD. Medina was one of the leaders of President Fernández's presidential campaign. He was one of the closest aides of the President, and in 1996, he was also appointed as the Presidency's Secretary. In 2004, with President Fernández succeeding to a second term, Danilo again became the President's Secretary, equivalent to the Chief of Staff.

Danilo Medina gave his resignation on November 8, 2006, from the post to launch his own PLD presidential nomination bid against President Fernández. He was talked of as having a complete grasp of the ruling party's politics and being considered the primary competitor for Fernández. But, President Fernández eventually defeated Danilo Medina on May 6, 2003, and his slogans for the campaign were 'Lo Mejor Para Todos' meaning 'The Best For Everybody' and 'Ahora Es', meaning 'Now Is The Time'. According to Danilo, his candidacy was suppressed by the government sources promoting that of Fernández. His supporters and Medina started maintaining a low profile.
