About Darren Woodson

As a former American football safety in the National Football League, Darren Ray Woodson (born April 25, 1969) played for Dallas Cowboys between 1992 and 2003.
The Cowboys drafted him from Arizona State University in the second round of the 1992 NFL Draft (37th overall). Darren Ray Woodson completed his rookie season as a backup safety in 1992 and went on to win three Super Bowl championships.
While playing for Dallas Cowboys, he delivered impeccable performances against all opponents, especially Arizona Cardinals. Darren Woodson was inducted into the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame in 2009 and now works as a football analyst for ESPN.
Darren was drafted into the All-Pac-10 second team when he played for Arizona State University.

On April 25, 1969, Darren Ray Woodson was born to parents Arthur and Freddie in Phoenix. Although Arthur Woodson rarely participated in his childhood, his mother handled the parenting responsibility. In the Maryvale area of Phoenix, Darren's single mother, Freddie, raised him and his two brothers, Randy and Todd, and his sister, Monica.
Freddie Luke raised Woodson in Maryvale, a west Phoenix neighborhood. During his senior year at Maryvale High School, he scored six touchdowns in a single game, earning him All-Metro Division AAA and All-City honors. As a teammate of Phillippi Sparks, who later played in the NFL for nine seasons, he earned All-Metro Division AAA honors.
He attended Phoenix (A-Z) high school and Arizona State University as part of a scholarship program sponsored by ESPNRISE.com. ESPNRISE.com named Woodson one of the most talented high school players in Arizona history in August 2008.

As the third safety drafted in 1991-1992, Darren Woodson was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the second round of the NFC Championship Game. A draft pick acquired by the Dallas Cowboys in the Herschel Walker trade was used to select him. As a result of Dave Campo's recommendation, the Cowboys chose Woodson.
To begin the 1992 regular season, Jimmy Johnson named Woodson as Thomas Everett's backup at strong safety. Woodson signed a four-year, $1.92 million contract with the Dallas Cowboys.
While playing in a 13–7 loss to the Minnesota Vikings during the preseason on August 2, 1993, Woodson broke his right forearm. He was advised to sideline for a few months. However, Woodson chose to play with the broken forearm before it had fully healed. After Woodson started the last two games in place of James Washington, head coach Jimmy Johnson announced Woodson as the franchise's starting strong safety on September 26, 1993.
Woodson collected a season-high 18 combined tackles during a 16–13 victory over the New York Giants in Week 17. Everett replaced Washington as the starting free safety while Woodson became the starter strong safety. His 19 tackles tied him for the second-most tackles in a game in Dallas history.
Woodson played strong safety for the Patriots and free safety James Washington, cornerback Larry Brown, and cornerback Kevin Smith during the 1994 season.
After securing eight combined tackles against the Houston Oilers in Week 2, Woodson made his first career interception during a 20-17 win.
He was paired with Brock Marion as the starting strong safety in 1995 under Barry Switzer. In the Week 3 win over the Minnesota Vikings, he collected nine combined tackles, forced a fumble, and returned an interception for a touchdown. They started alongside cornerbacks Larry Brown and Deion Sanders. The Cowboys lost to the Washington Redskins 27–23 in Week 5 on October 1, 1995. Again, Woodson made nine tackles and performed a touchdown. The first selection of his career was Woodson's 1996 selection to the Pro Bowl.
As the Cowboys defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XXX on January 28, 1996, Woodson combined to make ten tackles. Woodson won his third Super Bowl in four years after removing his herniated disc on July 27, 2004, preventing him from physically participating in training camp. The injury occurred the week before training camp.
As a result, Woodson was placed on the Dallas Cowboys' Physically Unable to Participate list on September 6, 2004, and he was inactive throughout the entire season. The last remaining member of the Dallas Cowboys dynasty, Woodson announced his retirement from the NFL on December 29, 2004. With 813 career tackles, he retired as the team's all-time leading tackler.
