About Dave Davies

David Russell Gordon Davies, popular with the stage name Dave Davies, is a celebrated guitarist and best known as the founding member of the rock band 'The Kinks'.

Though Dave took the subordinate role to his brother Ray Davies in the Kinks, his powerful guitar work and harsh but effective background vocals were key elements of the band's appeal. He occasionally wrote songs for the Kinks, which showed him to be a considerable writer of skill and wit.

Dave Davies started his music career in the '60s and created some of the outstanding rock songs of the 20th century. On The Kinks' first song, 'You Really Got Me,' Dave was fully accountable for the signature distorted power chord sound. He created this sound by slitting the speaker cone on an Elpico amplifier with a razor blade, then running it through a bigger Vox as a pre-amp. Other than that, this sound was one of the first widespread appearances of guitar distortion, and it influenced many later musicians, particularly in the metal and punk genres.

Shortly, his older brother Ray Davies joined the group, and the band released their first major hit, 'You Really Got Me', which brought him and his bandmates into the spotlight. Despite a few challenges that the band faced, they grew up steadily because of Ray's songwriting skills, and by the '60s, Ray was leading the Kinks.

In July 1967, Dave released his debut single as a solo artist titled 'Death Of A Clown'. The song performed very well and was ranked third on the UK Singles Chart. Subsequently, he released another follow-up single in November 1967 titled 'Susannah's Still Alive.' After that, his next singles, 'Hold My Hand', and 'Lincoln County', were a huge failure, so he did not record any further album.

However, in 2002, he released his first solo album, 'Bug' after 20 years. But unfortunately, he suffered from a heart stroke in 2004, and during the lengthy recovery phase, he used composing and painting as therapy. By 2006, Dave had recovered enough to talk, walk, and play guitar. The song, 'God In My Brain,' was inspired by the stroke and appeared in 2006's 'Kinked'. He then released his second album, 'Fractured Mindz', in 2007, and his third album, 'Two Worlds', in 2010.

His first autobiography, titled 'Kinked', was published in 1996, and his second autobiography, 'Living On A Thin Line', will be out in 2022.
