Dave was a key figure in Capitol's most aggressive music marketing strategies. When online gaming became popular, Dave was the mastermind for marketing music with them. Dave was also one of the key thinkers underlying the Starbucks-Capitol relationship. Starbucks agreed to sell a certain number of compact discs as part of their agreement.

On May 1, 2015, Dave Goldberg passed away unexpectedly on vacation with his wife in Mexico, in a beach resort villa inside the Four Seasons Resorts. At a hospital in Mexico, he was confirmed dead. Goldberg's demise was first traced to head trauma and severe bleeding after slipping from a treadmill while working out at a fitness center. Sandberg later clarified that her husband died of an arrhythmia produced by untreated coronary artery illness.

In an online statement, Dave's brother, Robert, detailed his family's 'huge shock and sorrow' and asked fellow fans to share images and stories on his Facebook account page. 'Instead of gifts', Robert Goldberg said, 'we want to honor his survival in a way that preserves the family's safety as they struggle with this terrible, life-changing situation'. Online condolences for Goldberg spread quickly across Silicon Valley. According to a representative, Facebook officials were gutted by the news. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote that Dave was a fantastic person on social media. 'Dave was one truly outstanding guy globally, with an almost unimaginable unique character', stated Twitter CEO Dick Costolo.

One of his buddies, famous poker champion Phil Hellmuth, gave Goldberg's family his remarkable 14th World Tournament of Poker wristband. On May 5, 2015, a memorial ceremony was conducted for Goldberg at Stanford Memorial Hall at Stanford University. Many people of what Fortune characterized as 'Silicon Valley's elite,' U2 vocalist Bono, who sang his tune 'One,' and star Ben Affleck attended the 90-minute event. Affleck had held positions with Goldberg on the Management Board for Live Planet, a business that Dave co-founded. The pair had also collaborated on many projects, and Affleck helped Goldberg raise financing for the Eastern Congo Program.
