The future Super Bowl champion aspired to be a professional football player. As a consequence, Wannstedt used to devote all of his free time to training and honing his craft in the hopes of playing in the NFL one day.
By the time he entered Baldwin High School, Dave had already established himself as a standout by playing offensive tackle.
When he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh, the Pennsylvania native was already established as one of the best prospects. Dave received an athletic scholarship to play offensive lineman and block. He played for eventual Heisman Trophy winner, Tony Dorsett.
Dave was chosen in the 15th round of the 1974 NFL draft. The Green Bay Packers selected him after a stellar career with the Panthers. However, he spent his sole NFL season on the injured reserve list due to a neck injury.

Dave's professional career began when he was drafted in the 1974 NFL draft by the Green Bay Packers. However, things quickly spiraled out of control. Wannstedt had a neck injury during preseason training and was never able to play again.
The Pennsylvania native secured a position as a coach. This move defined his legacy and career.
Following this, he was with the Pitt Panthers for four years. They won the NCAA Division-I national football title.
Wannstedt's lone Super Bowl victory came with the Dallas Cowboys. However, it was during the 1989 season that Dave got his big break in the coaching world. The Dallas Cowboys hired him as their defensive coordinator.
The Cowboys defense was regarded as one of the greatest at the time when he was coaching the team. Dave was the defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys when they won Super Bowl XVIII.
By 1993, Dave Wannstedt had established himself as one of the greatest coaches in the league. As a result, the Chicago Bears hired Dave as the new head coach in January 1993. Dave Wannstedt replaced the iconic Mike Ditka.
As soon as he got the position, Wannstedt was put under a lot of pressure to duplicate Ditka's prior work. The fact that this was his first position as a head coach in the NFL just added to the misery. As a result, Dave's six years with the Chicago Bears were a disaster. The team only made it to the playoffs once.
Due to his lackluster achievements over the course of six years, Dave Wannstedt was dismissed by the Chicago Bears in 1999.
On the other hand, Dave Wannstedt landed a new job with the Miami Dolphins. Dave became the defensive coordinator and assistant head coach at the same time.
Wannstedt had a lot of ups and downs during his five years with the Miami Dolphins. However, the Dolphins' head coach, Jimmy Johnson, unexpectedly chose to resign. This forced Dave to step in and take over as head coach. His following five years with the franchise were filled with twists and turns.
Dave Wannstedt got off to a great start with the Miami Dolphins. He led the team to two straight postseason berths in his first two years. However, Wannstedt's following three years with the Miami Dolphins were marked by disappointment.
After another late-season collapse in 2003 and no playoff appearance that year, Wannstedt became the face of a quickly deteriorating club. He was dismissed after the Dolphins were ousted from the playoffs the following season.
As a consequence, the Miami Dolphins' fans got bored with the Pennsylvania native. Dave eventually resigned in 2004.
Dave received the chance to lead his alma mater, the University of Pittsburgh. This was after just two months had passed since his departure.
Wannstedt said upon his arrival that managing his old squad was one of the happiest moments of his career. During his six-year tenure, Dave Wannstedt could not win any awards for the institution. The pressure became so intense that Wannstedt chose to retire from his position because he could not keep his commitments.
Despite this, the institution recognized his dedication by hiring him as a special assistant to the sports director. However, Dave refused the offer because he wanted a break from football.
After sitting out for over a year, Dave Wannstedt felt it was time to return to football. He joined the Buffalo Bills as an assistant head coach. But, just after a year of obtaining the position, Wannstedt was fired.
Following that, Dave became the special team coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Wannstedt's 20-year professional coaching career came to an end in 2013. He has not been involved in football since.
On the contrary, he has been on FOX Sports as a football analyst. During the NFL season, Dave is a regular on FOX NFL Kickoff.
