Bromberg began learning other instruments in high school and majored in musicology after entering Columbia University. The school was no match for the allure of performing in New York City's Greenwich Village's fertile folk music scene, and Bromberg dropped out to devote himself to gigs in coffee shops.

His collaboration with Jerry Jeff Walker in the ’60s, whom he supported as a musician for four years, was crucial to Bromberg's musical development.

He delivered an exceptional performance at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970, and Bromberg landed a recording contract with Columbia Records. His debut album, David Bromberg, was released the following year. Bromberg was never able to reach a large audience, but his recordings and performances as a frontman earned him consistent critical acclaim. He also managed to get the help of many notable performers as contributors to his works.

He eventually formed his own regular backing band, called The World's First Folk Orchestra, but Bromberg disbanded his band and announced that he would no longer perform live. In the same year, he relocated to Chicago to study violin-making at the Kenneth Warren School of Violin Making, and he began repairing instruments.
