He is one of the most well-known British actors and played major roles in cinema during the ’60s and ’70s. He started as a boy soprano and appeared in various operatic roles as well. David Hemmings was born in Guildford in Surrey, England. His father was a biscuit salesman. He attended Alleyn's School in Ewell and started his career performing as a boy soprano in various works by Benjamin Britten who was a composer and close friend with him.

Hemmings was a child actor and his first film appearance was in the drama film 'The Rainbow Jacket' which was released in 1954. Hemmings also played some roles as a teen idol as well. He was cast in the movie 'The Painted Smile' and also 'Some People' in 1962. His lead role in the teen musical 'Live It Up!' did pretty well. He also played a role in the movie 'Two Left Feet' with Michael Crawford.

David Hemmings had six children in total through his different partners, his youngest is daughter charlotte with Lucy Williams.

His son Nolan Hemmings is an actor himself and the child of Deborah Hemmings. Nolan Hemmings is known for his role in Band of Brothers as the character Charles E. Grant. Nolan is named after David Hemmings's character Captain Nolan, whom he played in the movie 'Charge of the Light Brigade'.

David Hemmings also directed and acted in the television film called 'The Key to Rebecca' which was released in 1985. In 1997, David Hemmings also appeared in the film 'Islands in the Stream' which was a cinema adaptation of Hemingway's novel of the same name.

In the ’70s David Hemmings also joined Easybeats as a singer-songwriter and produced the song 'Pasadena'. David Hemmings also acted in a horror movie called 'Voices' in 1973 and also went to Hollywood playing a supporting role in 'The Love Machine' (1971). He also played a role in the 1965 movie 'Be my Guest' as the character Dave Martin.

David Hemmings reached his peak as an actor when he got cast in the lead of 'Blowup' (1966). This was a life-changing moment for him, however, the director thought that Hemmings was too young of an actor to play the role. Regardless, he got the part of the protagonist after Sean Connery left the film. In Blowup Hemmings played the part of a fashion photographer turned villain.

David Hemmings played a key role in 'Barbarella' which was a huge financial success and pushed Hemmings into stardom. Hemmings also traveled to Spain and appeared in the film 'Lola' in 1974. Hemmings was also the director of the film 'Schöner Gigolo, armer Gigolo' which starred David Bowie and Marlene Dietrich. However, the film was not at all well received. By 1977, Hemmings went on to become a side character than the main lead. This was the time that he decided to try his hand at directing, and even though some managed to do well, most of them flopped.

Hemmings also provided narration for Rick Wakeman's progressive-rock album 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth' which was released in 1994 and also Jules Verne's science-fiction novel 'A Journey to the Center of the Earth' released in 1884 which was also recorded live.

In 1967 Hemmings got a nomination for Male New Face in Golden laurel and also won the NBR Award for best acting by an Ensemble for 'Last Orders'. His film 'The Survivor' won the Prize of International Critics Jury in 1981 and the western documentary he was a part of titled 'Ned Blessing: The Story of My Life and Times' which came out in 1993 won the Bronze Wrangler Award.
