He mostly competed in North American regional wrestling promotions during the late '70s and earlier years of the '80s, a few of them being the American Wrestling Association, the National Wrestling Alliance, and the Stampede Wrestling Tournaments. David Shultz, his tag team partner Randy Savage, and Savage's brother Lanny Poffo are known for being the first major regional wrestlers to be signed by American wrestling promoter Vince McMahon.

'The Redneck' is best remembered for a short stint that took place in the year 1984 in the World Wrestling Federation, where he had a famous encounter with 20/20 reporter John Stossel, with the altercation later being aired on national television. Stossel was said to be covering a report on the legitimacy of professional wrestling at the time, which made Schultz unhappy with him.
