Born in Omaha, Nebraska, United States, David Sokol was the youngest child in a family of five siblings. His father was a manager at a grocery store in the city. According to Sokol about his mother, "she was the kind of mother who had cookies warm out of the oven when you came home from school," and "she focused on our care and education." David Sokol's parents were married 25 years before he was born, and according to him, "my oldest sibling is 23 years older than me, so there were times when it seemed like I had more than just two parents."

At the age of 11, Sokol began working by bailing hay with local farmers. He also worked as a paperboy, a janitor at a hardware store, and a caddie. While he was in high school, he got a job as a maintenance manager for a building and at a grocery mart as a bagger. While working there, he eventually became a night manager.

David attended a Catholic grade school and a public high school before enrolling at the University of Nebraska, Omaha, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering in 1978. He later received an honorary doctorate from Bellevue University in Nebraska.

David L. Sokol is best known for being a famous American business executive. In 1978, after he graduated from the University of Nebraska, Sokol began his professional career as a structural engineer with HDR, Inc., an Omaha-based design and structural engineering company.

From April 1993 to January 1995, Sokol served as the president of a division of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., MidAmerican Energy Holdings Company, and also held the position of CEO within the same division until April 2008. David Sokol was once the president and CEO of Kiewit Energy Company, a subsidiary of Peter Kiewit Sons, Inc., and Ogden Projects, Inc.

David L. Sokol was the CEO and chairman of the board of managers of MidAmerican Energy Holdings' subsidiary, MidAmerican Funding LLC, from its formation in March 1999 until his resignation in 2011.

David Sokol has served as the chairman of several other companies and divisions, including Omaha Metropolitan Entertainment and Convention Authority, CE Casecnan Water & Energy Co., Inc., HomeServices of America, Inc., and Northern Electric PLC. Sokol also held positions as a director of Omaha Airport Authority and CE Electric UK Funding Company and as a non-executive director of BYD Company Ltd.

In 2011, Sokol purchased a significant amount of Lubrizol stock, specifically 96,060 shares for $104 per share in January. This occurred before he recommended to Warren Buffett and the board that Berkshire Hathaway should acquire the company.Subsequently, in March 2011, the board of Berkshire Hathaway approved the acquisition of Lubrizol at a share price of $135. A lawsuit was later filed against David Sokol by Berkshire Hathaway shareholders. Sokol resigned from his position at Berkshire on March 28, 2011.

  • In April 2010, a Douglas County court found that David Sokol, as the CEO of MidAmerican Energy Holdings Company, altered the forecasted profit figures. This alteration erased the stake of San Lorenzo Ruiz Builders & Developers Group in a Philippines venture from the '90s. Consequently, MidAmerican was ordered to pay $32 million.
  • La Prairie Group Contractors sued MidAmerican in a 2002 California state court, where Judge Richard Kramer decided that La Prairie should receive approximately $30 million and a stake in future profits from MidAmerican.
