David Richard Solberg was born on August 28, 1943 to June (Nelson) and Richard W. Solberg. Both his maternal and paternal grandfathers were ministers (evangelists). Soul's mother was a teacher. After World War II, Germany was to be re-established. From 1949-1956, Dr. Richard W. Solberg acted as a Senior Representative for Lutheran World Relief. The family would often move to new cities. Dr. Solberg was the Director of the Lutheran Church, a minister, and a professor of political science and history at Augustana College. Soul went to high school at Washington High School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
For his college years, David Soul first enrolled at Augustana College where his father taught political science. He went to Augustana College for a period of two years before transferring to the University of the Americas in Mexico. This was only due to the family's frequent moves to new cities. While in college, his fellow companions trained him to play guitar, which moved David Soul to follow his passion for music. Hence, after studying at the University of the Americas for one year, Soul, at last, decided to drop out of college. David Soul gave his first performance at The 10 O'Clock Scholar, a club in Minneapolis, when he returned to Mexico City.

In 1968, Soul met Karen Carlson, an actress and a coworker, in the television series 'Here Come The Brides'. They eventually married one another and had a child together. The marriage lasted about a decade and they got divorced in 1977. David Soul was also known to be in a relationship with Lina Marta during the production of the TV series 'Starsky And Hutch'. The couple never got married nor had a child.
In the early '80s, David Soul married the ex-wife of Bobby Sherman, who is known for being a '60s pop idol as well as a member of the cast in 'Here Come The Brides.' Soul had another child with his third wife, Patti Carnel Sherman, before getting divorced in 1986. Julia Nickson and David Soul married in 1987 and shared a child, China Soul, who is also a singer-songwriter. After having a long-term relationship for eight years with Helen Snell, whom he met while shooting for 'Deathtrap' (British stage production of the movie), he married again in 2010. In 2004, David Soul became a British citizen after acquiring British citizenship. Later that year, in 1967, Soul had a guest appearance in 'Star Trek' and later worked on the series 'Here Come The Brides' playing the famous role of Joshua Bolt after signing with Columbia Pictures. His co-stars were already famous personalities like Robert Brown, Bobby Sherman, and Bridget Hanley. 'Here Come The Brides' first aired on September 25, 1968 on the ABC Network, which ran for about two years until September 18, 1970. After many appearances as a guest in the television industry, he landed his first debut movie, 'Magnum Force'.
David Soul recorded his two single hits in the mid-'70s, which were both produced by Tony Macaulay. 'Silver Lady' and 'Don't Give Up On Us' both topped the UK singles charts. After his singles topped charts even in the U.S., David Soul toured the far east, South America, and Europe from 1976-1982.
David Soul gained popularity when he starred in the show, 'Starsky And Hutch' playing the role of Detective Ken 'Hutch' Hutchinson for two years.
