Interestingly, Yates had begun to write the screenplay and direct his short film 'The Weaver's Wife' even before film school finished.
In 2004, David Yates realized that he had made it to the final list to direct the fifth film, 'Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix' produced by Warner Bros, of the 'Harry Potter' franchise. A little later, he was chosen to direct it. Since the filmmaking process went well, Yates became the natural choice for the studio to helm the sixth film of the franchise, ‘Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince.’
During the shooting of the 'Half-Blood Prince,' Warner Bros. revealed that Yates would once again direct the final installment of the franchise. The final film, 'Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows,' was split into two parts, Part 1 & 2. 'Deathly Hallows' broke box office records worldwide, earning over $977 million in its lifetime. As a filmmaker, David Yates has been immensely influenced by directors David Lean and Steven Spielberg.
However, 2005 saw David Yates direct his ninth television film, 'The Girl In The Café'. The movie was aired in the UK on BBC, while Home Box Office got the airing rights in the USA.
Taking his success further, David Yates once again wore his director's cap in 2016 for the movie 'Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them.' Based on J. K. Rowling's popular book, the film is set in the 'Harry Potter' universe and was the first in a series of five movies. Yates directed the sequel, 'Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald', two years later, which was a roaring success at the box office with a collection of $654 million, despite mixed reviews.
