She had been dubbed the 'Queen of the Blues'. 'Trapped By A Thing Called Love' and 'Down Home Blues' are two of her best-known songs.

Denise LaSalle was admitted to the Blues Hall of Fame in 2011. She passed away at the age of 84 on January 8, 2018. She died in the hospital due to complications from a fall and heart issues. Her right leg was surgically removed in October 2017 due to complications from a fall. A memorial honoring her was placed at Belzoni's Mississippi Blues Trail in 2009.

Denise LaSalle was born Ora Denise Allen on July 16, 1934. She was born at a location that was once known as The Island and was close to Sidon, Mississippi. Her parents were Nancy Cooper and Nathaniel A Allen, Sr.

She had to pick cotton and engage in other paid tasks to support her family since they were sharecroppers. From the age of seven, she was brought to Belzoni and participated in church choirs for regional gospel groups around Leflore County. She relocated to Chicago at the age of 13 to live with her older brother.

When Denise LaSalle was 22 years old, she wed Artic Craig. He was her brother's coworker at Campbell Soup. LaSalle and Craig were only married for a brief period of time. However, they didn't legally nullify the marriage until just before she wed Bill Jones.

The couple married in 1969. In 1974, they separated. They both worked together to produce music. Jones and LaSalle founded Crajon Records, an independent production firm.

Denise LaSalle wed James E Wolfe, Jr. in 1977. She was with him until the time of her death.

Denise LaSalle created songs while sitting in with R&B musicians and was inspired by both country and the blues genres. She first met Billy Emerson while she was a bartender at the Mix's Lounge in the early '60s. He was working for Chess Records at the time. They signed a one-year recording deal with Chess, but no recordings were made. Later, Emerson founded his own record company, Tarpon. In 1967, he released LaSalle's song through his label. The single was named 'A Love Reputation', and it was a regional success.

In 1971, Denise LaSalle released her debut song 'Trapped By A Thing Called Love'. She released it with Westbound Records, a Detroit-based label. The song peaked at number one on the national R&B chart. It was ranked 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 list. In November 1971, the song received the RIAA gold disc award. She also produced the hit follow-ups 'Now Run And Tell That' and 'Man Sized Job'. The songs peaked at numbers three and four, respectively, on the R&B top ten and reached the Hot 100 list.

Denise LaSalle relocated to Jackson, Tennessee, in 1976. There she secured a deal with ABC Records. 'Love Me Right' was another success for her. MCA acquired ABC, and LaSalle produced three albums for them. She kept on producing and doing live stage performances.

She joined the Malaco label in 1982 as a composer, penning songs for Z Z Hill and others. The album 'Lady In The Street' was released in 1983. She kept recording for Malaco for 15 years and put out a number of well-received albums. Urban radio stations in southern regions featured her R&B, soul blues, and soul music. She received her lone UK Singles Chart recognition in 1985. Her rendition of Rockin' Sidney's 'My Toot Toot' peaked at number six.

Denise LaSalle participated in the Long Beach Blues Festival in 1984 and 1993. She also had a performance at the 1993 San Francisco Blues Festival. Her CD titled 'Smokin' In Bed' was a success. She had said in interviews that when working with Westbound and ABC or MCA, she was able to record whatever song she wanted. However, her options were more constrained at Malaco.

Following her time with Malaco, Denise LaSalle founded her own record company, Ordena. She put out a few albums, including the gospel album 'God's Got My Back'. She also released the two-CD collection 'This Real Woman'. It had a variety of music, including country, R&B, blues, and pop. She began recording once again in 2002 for a new label. She worked for the company Ecko Records, located in Memphis. The album she recorded for Ecko Records was titled 'Still The Queen'. She returned to Malaco in 2010 to release the album '24 Hour Woman'.
