Still, in 1996, he received an honor from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) as part of the First Team All-District recognizing him as one of the top-performing basketball players in the district.

After graduating college, Derek Fisher was picked in the NBA draft in 1996. As the 24th overall pick during his rookie season by the Los Angeles Lakers, Fisher had the chance to play alongside Shaquille O'Neal and the legendary Kobe Bryant. He played point guard for the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers concluded the regular 2000-2001 season with an eight-game winning streak, ultimately achieving 56 wins. Derek Fisher started his coaching career in 2014 with the New York Knicks. He signed a $25 million deal with the Knicks as their head coach. Under his guidance, the New York Knicks made an overall record of 40-96. His appointment with the Knicks ended in 2016.

At the end of 2018, the former NBA player signed on with the Los Angeles Sparks as their head coach, and with a good career status, he became the general manager of the team in December 2020.
